Tributes to Jean-Michel Basquiat
Overview
Tributes to the legacy of Neo-Expressionist painter Jean-Michel Basquiat have emerged through various artistic mediums. Initially, actor and writer Roger Guenveur Smith presented a one-man spoken word production, ‘In Honour of Jean-Michel Basquiat’, at the New York Theatre Workshop. The performance utilized a non-linear narrative and live sound to explore Basquiat’s life and his friendship with Andy Warhol.
Following this, new visual tributes were introduced, including the unveiling of a 60-foot-tall outdoor mural by artist Owen Dippie in Manhattan, located near Basquiat’s former residence. Additionally, the Princeton University Art Museum launched an exhibition titled ‘Basquiat, the Blue Ribbon Paintings, and the Art of Reproduction’, which examines the artist’s integration of printmaking techniques and reproductive technologies into his 1984 works.
