Jean‑Luc Mélenchon Calls for France to Leave NATO and Deepen Ties with China
Jean‑Luc Mélenchon, the La France insoumise candidate for the 2027 French presidential election, outlined a “cooperative non‑alignment” foreign‑policy vision at a geopolitics colloquium. He called for France’s withdrawal from the NATO alliance while keeping defence cooperation within the European Union. Mélenchon urged the initiation of negotiations with Russia contingent on a Russian pull‑back from Ukraine and advocated a renewed United Nations framework free from “closed‑club” diplomacy such as the G7 and G20.
He positioned China as a central partner, rejecting any policy of confrontation and proposing an “enhanced cooperation” strategy with Beijing. Mélenchon characterised the United States as entering a period of decline and called for a multipolar world order in which France would act as an intermediary rather than a member of the Atlantic bloc.
