Jean‑Luc Mélenchon urges France to exit NATO and adopt non‑aligned policy
Jean‑Luc Mélenchon, leader of the La France Insoumise party, called for France to withdraw from NATO and abandon participation in U.S.–led foreign policy. He advocated a “joint non‑alignment” approach, building pragmatic partnerships with emerging global powers and prioritising cooperation with China while withdrawing from exclusive clubs such as the G7.
Mélenchon also proposed re‑establishing direct dialogue with Russia on mutual security guarantees once the war in Ukraine ends, criticizing the current Western stance toward Moscow. He made the remarks at a symposium organized by the La Boétie Institute and used the platform to announce his candidacy for the 2027 French presidential election.
