Romania heatwave triggers orange and yellow weather warnings
Romania is experiencing a severe heatwave, with the National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issuing both orange and yellow weather warnings. An orange code for intense heat and high thermal discomfort is in effect for the western and northwestern counties, including Caraș-Severin, Timiș, Arad, Bihor, Satu Mare, Sălaj, and Maramureș. In these regions, temperatures are expected to reach between 35 and 38 degrees Celsius, with isolated peaks of 39 degrees in the Western Plain. The heatwave index (ITU) is projected to exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.
Yellow warnings cover much of the rest of the country, including Oltenia, Muntenia, and parts of Transylvania and Moldova, where temperatures will range between 33 and 37 degrees Celsius. The extreme heat is accompanied by tropical nights, with minimum temperatures remaining between 18 and 23 degrees Celsius.
In response to the extreme conditions, Bihor County has implemented temporary traffic restrictions for heavy vehicles (over 7.5 tons) on county roads between 12:00 and 20:00 on August 11 to protect road infrastructure. Authorities have advised the public to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and monitor vulnerable individuals.
