Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin secures $10 billion in first external funding round
Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos, announced it is raising about $10 billion in its first-ever round of outside financing, valuing the privately held firm at roughly $130 billion. Bezos is contributing $2 billion of his own money, while asset‑management firm Coatue Management is expected to lead the institutional side with a $4 billion investment and other large investors are slated to provide the remaining $4 billion.
The capital raise broadens the company’s investor base after more than two decades of financing chiefly through Bezos’s sales of Amazon stock. It comes as Blue Origin expands its reusable launch services, recently completing a successful New Glenn mission that delivered NASA science spacecraft and recovered its first‑stage booster at sea, and continues development of the Blue Moon lunar lander for NASA’s Artemis program. The company also faced a setback when a New Glenn vehicle exploded during a ground‑test in May, but the launch pad was cleared within days and the firm aims to return the rocket to flight before year‑end.
The funding highlights growing institutional confidence in the commercial space sector, which is intensifying competition with rivals such as SpaceX, especially after SpaceX’s recent public listing.
