Jeju 4·3 Incident victim registration to resume after four years
Jeju Province has announced that the 9th additional registration period for victims and bereaved families of the Jeju 4·3 Incident will resume after a four-year hiatus. Following the approval of an amendment to the enforcement decree of the Special Act on the Investigation of the Jeju 4·3 Incident and the Restoration of Honor of Victims, the registration period is scheduled to run for six months, from February 1 to July 31, 2027.
This move follows recommendations from the Jeju 4·3 Victim Bereaved Families Association and subsequent legislative processes involving the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The previous 8th registration period in 2023 saw 19,559 applicants, including 734 victims and 18,825 bereaved family members.
In conjunction with the new registration period, several deadlines have been extended. The period for applying for the correction of family relationship registers and determining common-law or adoptive relationships has been extended to August 31, 2028. Additionally, the deadline for victims identified in the 9th registration to apply for compensation has been extended to December 31, 2029. Applications can be submitted at local administrative offices in Jeju, and overseas residents may apply through local Jeju community organizations or diplomatic missions.
