Jeju Governor aims to resolve Second Airport conflict by 2025
Jeju Governor Wi Seong-gon has announced a goal to resolve the long-standing conflict regarding the construction of the Jeju Second Airport by the first half of next year. During a press conference, Wi emphasized the need to end the 11-year dispute by gathering resident opinions and submitting the results to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
The proposed roadmap includes designating the project for intensive environmental impact assessment and establishing a Conflict Adjustment Council. While the Social Pact Committee recently delayed the review of the council's operational plan to allow for more stakeholder communication, Wi stated that the administration would pursue the process to ensure objectivity and transparency.
In addition to the airport issue, Governor Wi addressed changes to wind power profit-sharing policies. He indicated a shift from the current system, where operators contribute 17.5% of net profits to a shared fund, toward a model where residents can invest directly in wind power projects to share returns. He also noted that some previous campaign promises, such as the establishment of a local agricultural distribution corporation, are being re-evaluated due to changing central government policies and public opinion.
