Jeju Second Airport construction dispute

Overview

The long-standing dispute regarding the construction of the Jeju Second Airport has entered a phase of attempted resolution through public consultation and administrative oversight.

Jeju Governor Wi Seong-gon announced a roadmap to resolve the 11-year conflict by the first half of next year. This plan involves conducting intensive environmental impact assessments and establishing a Conflict Adjustment Council to gather resident opinions for submission to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

In support of this process, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Hong Ji-seon, pledged that the central government would respect and accept the results of public opinion collection. Minister Hong indicated full support for the provincial government’s Conflict Adjustment Council. While the Jeju Second Airport Emergency Citizens' Meeting welcomed this stance, the Jeju branch of the Progressive Party has advocated for a resident referendum to ensure democratic sovereignty.
