Jeju Province proposes hosting Global AI Hub

The Jeju Research Institute has proposed that Jeju Province is well-prepared to host the government’s planned ‘Global AI Hub.’ According to a policy brief, the hub is intended to be an open multilateral cooperation platform involving nine UN agencies and five multilateral development banks to address global challenges in climate, health, and food security.

Researchers highlighted that Jeju already possesses critical infrastructure for international cooperation. This includes the UNITAR Jeju International Training Center (CIFAL Jeju), which has provided international training to thousands of participants from over 150 countries, and the Global Cooperation Division of the National Information Society Agency (NIA) located in Seogwipo. The institute suggested five key tasks to secure the hub, including establishing new AI training courses and reviewing legal requirements for international organizations.

In a separate discussion regarding AI integration, experts are emphasizing the importance of ‘public intelligence’ and citizen literacy. Rather than viewing AI as a tool for specialists, there is a push for Jeju-style education that teaches residents how to verify AI outputs. This approach focuses on using AI for drafting and organizing thoughts while maintaining human oversight for critical decisions involving legal, financial, or health matters.
