Jeju Province technological and startup development
Overview
Jeju Province is pursuing several strategic initiatives to establish itself as a major technological and entrepreneurial hub.
The Jeju Research Institute has proposed that the province host a government-planned ‘Global AI Hub.’ This proposed multilateral platform would involve nine UN agencies and five multilateral development banks to address global issues such as climate, health, and food security. To support this, researchers emphasized utilizing existing infrastructure like the UNITAR Jeju International Training Center and the National Information Society Agency, while also promoting ‘Jeju-style education’ to improve citizen AI literacy.
Simultaneously, the province is bidding for a government designation as a ‘startup city’ through the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. If successful, Jeju would receive 60 billion KRW over four years to develop a deep tech ecosystem. This plan aims to integrate local growth industries—including energy, space, mobility, and bio-technology—with startup support, ranging from initial commercialization to global market expansion.
