Jeju Second Airport: Land Minister pledges to respect resident opinions
The Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Hong Ji-seon, has stated that the government will actively respect and accept the results of public opinion collection regarding the construction of the Jeju Second Airport. In response to written inquiries from a National Assembly hearing, Minister Hong emphasized that the will of Jeju residents is the most important factor in the project's progression.
Minister Hong pledged to provide full support to the Conflict Adjustment Council being established by the Jeju provincial government to gather resident feedback. The Jeju provincial government plans to launch this council within the second half of this year and aims to finalize the decision on the airport's development by the first half of next year.
The Jeju Second Airport Emergency Citizens' Meeting welcomed the Minister's stance, noting it aligns with previous indications from the presidency to let residents decide. Meanwhile, the Jeju branch of the Progressive Party has called for the use of a resident referendum as the most direct method to realize democratic sovereignty in this matter.
