Jember, Indonesia to launch Rp1.5‑2 trillion waste‑to‑energy facility

Bupati Gus Fawait inspected the planned Pakusari landfill (TPA) in Jember on 27 June, confirming that the central government will back a modern waste‑to‑energy project worth between Rp1.5 trillion and Rp2 trillion. Construction is scheduled to start between August and September 2026, with completion targeted for April 2028. The facility will convert municipal waste into electricity and marketable products, create new jobs and may serve as a regional waste‑processing hub.

On the same day the Jember regency council approved a new Environmental Protection and Management regulation. The ordinance aims to strengthen the 3R approach (reduce, reuse, recycle), promote circular‑economy partnerships with private firms, and raise public awareness so waste handling becomes a community habit. Officials said the regulation will provide a legal framework to support the upcoming investment and improve health and environmental conditions.

Both the investment and the regulation are presented as a coordinated effort to address Jember’s growing waste volumes, modernise disposal methods, and foster sustainable development for the district and neighboring areas.
