Colombia faces earthquake recovery, fiscal pressure, and security operations
Colombia is navigating a complex period of crisis following a magnitude 7.4 earthquake on August 10. President Abelardo de la Espriella has utilized TikTok as a primary tool for digital-first governance and crisis communication in the aftermath of the disaster.
In response to the earthquake, Cine Colombia has closed eight multiplexes across several cities, including Cali and Pereira, while evaluating structural damage. Economically, the disaster has intensified fiscal pressures. Former Finance Minister José Antonio Ocampo has urged the administration to maintain the wealth tax to fund reconstruction efforts and address a fiscal deficit exceeding 6% of GDP.
On the security front, President De la Espriella reported significant anti-narcotics operations during his first 15 days in office, including the seizure of 12 tons of cocaine and 11 tons of marijuana, alongside the destruction of 162 production sites. Meanwhile, the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) announced plans for a Victims' Memory Center in Nariño and upcoming hearings in Pasto for 15 former FARC-EP combatants and 8 members of the Public Force who have accepted responsibility for crimes committed during the conflict.
