Jerez de la Frontera launches West Nile fever prevention plan

The Animal Protection Service in Jerez de la Frontera has launched the 2026 Municipal Plan for Vector Surveillance and Control to prevent West Nile fever. Developed by the company Lokimica, the plan has been shared with the Jerez Health District. A key finding of the report indicates that “80% of potential breeding sites are located in private areas,” prompting a public awareness campaign to educate residents on the virus cycle, the importance of eliminating stagnant water, and personal protection measures.

Authorities have increased fumigation in green spaces and are conducting biological controls in the sewage system throughout the summer. Carmen Pina, the delegate for Animal Protection, stated that the service remains in “permanent alert” to act quickly alongside other administrations if cases are detected.

In a broader regional context, the municipality of Algodonales has been added to the list of Andalusian towns under health alert after entomological surveillance confirmed the presence of the virus in captured mosquitoes. Other affected areas include Olivares, Las Cabezas de San Juan, and Pulpí.
