As a heatwave pushed temperatures in Philadelphia and surrounding areas above 100 °F, thousands of families and beachgoers travelled to the Jersey Shore for relief ahead of the Fourth of July weekend. In Sea Isle City, crowds enjoyed cooler ocean breezes with temperatures around 80 °F, while the sand remained hot – one visitor noted the sand "really hot; it burns your feet." Business owners reported a surge in customers, and lifeguards prepared for the influx, noting generally calm ocean conditions but stronger lateral currents. Visitors described the contrast vividly: "Down here it's beautiful. Back home it's probably 105," said a Pennsylvania resident, and another beachgoer said, "It’s like 80 degrees down here with a nice cool breeze. It’s beautiful." Heavy traffic and back‑road routes were reported, but many said the trip was worth the cost for the cooler beach experience.

The spike in attendance also spurred informal commerce, such as an 8‑year‑old setting up a lemonade stand that netted a $20 bill. Local events, including a fireworks display scheduled for Saturday night, were expected to draw even larger evening crowds, while some daytime activities elsewhere were postponed due to the extreme heat.
