New Jersey Shore summer 2026
Overview
A July heatwave drew thousands from Philadelphia to the Jersey Shore, prompting a series of rip‑current alerts and beach‑safety warnings. Throughout the month the National Weather Service issued moderate‑risk rip‑current warnings, Small Craft Advisories, and occasional air‑quality alerts as waves rose to 3–6 ft, winds shifted between northeast, southwest and northwest breezes, and UV indexes ranged from moderate to very high. Ocean temperatures stayed in the low‑80 °F range. On July 27 the moderate‑risk rip‑current warning and Small Craft Advisory were extended through Wednesday afternoon, with high‑surf conditions expected to linger until Saturday. Winds from the south (10‑20 kt, gusts to 30 kt) produced 3‑6 ft seas, while coastal flooding was deemed possible in low‑lying areas, though no significant structural damage was forecast. By August 1, conditions stabilized with a low rip‑current risk, 1–2 ft waves, and southwest winds of 4–10 mph. Weather conditions became more adverse by the second week of August. On August 8, a heat advisory was issued as heat index values reached up to 102 degrees, accompanied by a moderate risk of life‑threatening rip currents. A Code Orange air quality alert was also set for August 9, warning that pollution concentrations might be “unhealthy for sensitive groups.” By August 11, temperatures were forecast between 84°F and 91°F with a high UV index of 7. Marine conditions returned to a low rip current risk with waves of 1–2 feet and west winds of 6 to 13 mph. On August 15, the UV index was rated as “very high at 8” with low rip current risks and ocean temperatures between 70 and 83 degrees Fahrenheit. Stronger winds and larger seas were expected by Sunday, August 16.
