Jet-powered Shahed drones pose new threat to Ukrainian infrastructure
Russia has introduced new jet-powered Shahed drones in Ukraine that travel at speeds between 480 and 640 kilometers per hour, significantly faster than previous models that flew at approximately 240 kilometers per hour. This increased velocity reduces the reaction time for Ukrainian air defense units from roughly 30–45 minutes to as little as five to ten minutes in some cases.
These new drones feature specific modifications designed to target critical infrastructure. Observations indicate the use of drones equipped with nose spikes intended to trigger detonation upon contact with high-voltage power lines. Additionally, reports suggest the deployment of the KRSN shaped-charge warhead, which is specifically designed to cut through metal structures like steel bridge components and power line supports rather than providing wide-area blast damage.
Ukrainian manufacturers are working to develop countermeasures, including faster interceptors, jet engines, and AI-guided systems. However, experts note that scaling production to the necessary levels could take three to six months, leaving a critical window of vulnerability as these drones target energy, telecommunications, and transportation infrastructure.
