Jiang Chaolyan sentenced to death with reprieve for massive bribery

Jiang Chaolyan, the former Party Secretary of Hubei Province, has been sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by the Nanjing Intermediate People's Court. The ruling follows findings that Jiang accepted bribes exceeding 746 million yuan (approximately $111 million USD) between 1995 and 2025.

According to the court, Jiang leveraged his various official positions to assist businesses and individuals in securing loans, obtaining government contracts, and advancing their careers in exchange for illegal assets. His career included high-level roles at major financial institutions, such as the Agricultural Bank of China, China Communications Bank, and the State Development Bank of China, as well as serving as the Governor of Jilin Province.

While the court noted the extreme severity of the bribery and the damage to state interests, the two-year reprieve was granted due to Jiang's confession, expression of remorse, repayment of illegal funds, and cooperation with investigators. Jiang provided information regarding previously unknown corruption cases and verified the criminal activities of others. If he commits no further crimes during the reprieve period, his sentence may be commuted to life imprisonment, though he will be stripped of political rights for life and all assets will be confiscated.
