Chinese anti-corruption sentencing of high-level officials

High-ranking Chinese officials have received severe sentences following investigations into large-scale bribery.

Jiang Chaolyan, the former Party Secretary of Hubei Province and former Governor of Jilin Province, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by the Nanjing Intermediate People's Court. The court found that Jiang accepted bribes exceeding 746 million yuan between 1995 and 2025, using his influence at various financial institutions and government offices to assist others in exchange for illegal assets. His sentence may be commuted to life imprisonment if he commits no further crimes during the reprieve period.

Separately, Wang Jianjun, the former vice president of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), was sentenced to life imprisonment by a court in Weifang, Shandong province. Wang was found to have accepted over 93.4 million yuan between 2005 and 2019, using his regulatory positions to favor specific companies regarding stock listings and corporate financing. The court noted that the scale of the bribes was ‘especially elevated’ and caused ‘especially grave losses’ to state interests.
