Jiangxi mudslides kill 12 and leave one missing in China

A series of mudslides and landslides triggered by torrential rains from Typhoon Saudel has caused significant devastation in Jiangxi Province, China. In Mingkeng Village, located in Suichuan County, 12 people have been confirmed dead and one person remains missing as of Tuesday evening.

Additional fatalities and disappearances were reported in Zuo’an and Tanghu townships. The heavy rainfall has affected approximately 161,500 residents across the province. Rescue operations are being hampered by destroyed roads, which have made it difficult for teams to reach the most impacted areas.

Authorities have evacuated over 15,000 people in the Suichuan district to safety, providing them with food, water, and medical supplies. In response to the escalating situation, China’s Ministry of Natural Resources raised the geological disaster emergency response level from IV to III. The National Development and Reform Commission has also allocated 20 million yuan ($2.95 million) for natural disaster relief efforts.
