Jiangxi Province landslide and flooding crisis

Overview

Heavy rainfall and extreme weather associated with Typhoon Saudel (also referred to as Shadel or Saede) have triggered severe mudslides and landslides across Jiangxi Province, China.

In Suichuan County, a severe landslide struck Mingkeng Village in Gaoping Town during the early morning of September 5. The disaster resulted in 13 fatalities and caused significant damage to residential structures, with 12 houses affected and eight completely destroyed. This incident occurred in an area previously classified as a low-risk zone due to stable terrain and dense vegetation. Experts noted that extreme rainfall exceeding 600mm over six days created a chain-reaction pattern where mountain collapses triggered valley mudflows.

The torrential rains have affected approximately 161,500 residents across the province. Rescue operations face significant challenges as destroyed roads, along with disruptions to electricity, water, and communication networks, hinder access to the most impacted areas. In response to the devastation, authorities have evacuated over 15,000 people in the Suichuan district, providing them with food, water, and medical supplies. Emergency response teams have utilized life detection equipment to conduct search and rescue operations.

In response to the escalating crisis, the Ministry of Natural Resources upgraded the geological disaster response level for the province from Level-IV to Level-III. Additionally, the National Development and Reform Commission has allocated 20 million yuan (approximately $2.95 million) for natural disaster relief efforts.
