Jihadist Attack Forces Evacuation of Kouakourou Village in Mali

On 18 July 2026, the jihadist group Jnim, linked to al‑Qaida, seized the military camp at Kouakourou in Mali’s Djenné district and shot down a Malian Army helicopter the following day. Several soldiers in civilian clothes were captured, and the Mali‑Russian Africa Corps convoy was forced to withdraw without reaching the village.

The militants ordered the 5,000‑strong population of Kouakourou to leave. Villagers fled to nearby hamlets such as Pora and Saba or travelled up to 40 km to Djenné, where they are now housed with relatives or in a school under the care of authorities. Humanitarian aid, including food and mosquito nets, has been distributed by the national social development directorate, and some families have continued onward to Bamako.

The incident highlights the growing insecurity in central Mali and the challenges faced by the Malian army and its Russian partners in countering jihadist advances.
