Tibet debris flow leaves 558 missing near China-Nepal border
A massive debris flow triggered by an ice-rock avalanche has caused significant casualties and destruction near the Gyirong Port in the Tibet Autonomous Region, on the border of China and Nepal. As of the morning of August 27, 2026, authorities reported 3 confirmed deaths and 558 people missing, including 260 foreign nationals.
Scientific analysis from the Chinese Academy of Sciences suggests the disaster originated from a glacier collapse at an altitude between 5,200 and 5,400 meters. The resulting debris flow moved at speeds of 40 to 50 meters per second, reaching the Gyirong Port area in only seven minutes, leaving residents little time to evacuate.
In response, Shigatse has activated a Level I disaster response, and the Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources has deployed teams to manage secondary geological hazards. International leaders have responded to the tragedy: Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message of condolence to President Xi Jinping, and Vietnamese leadership sent messages of inquiry to both Chinese and Nepalese officials. The Russian Embassy in China confirmed that at least two Russian citizens are among those missing.
