Jim Mora dismisses Colorado State defensive coordinator Tyson Summers

Colorado State head coach Jim Mora has dismissed defensive coordinator Tyson Summers following a 56-23 loss to the Oregon State Beavers. The decision was made mid-game during the second scoring drive by the opposition. During the contest, defensive line coach Kenny McClendon took over play-calling duties, while cornerbacks coach Trent Matthews handled defensive signaling.

The dismissal follows a period of defensive struggles for the Rams, who have allowed back-to-back 50-point games for the first time since 1984. Colorado State currently ranks among the worst in the country in yards allowed per game and against the run. Mora indicated that the defensive scheme may have been too complex, stating the need to ‘shrink the package’ to help players play faster and with more certainty.

Summers, a veteran with previous coaching experience at Colorado State and in Boulder, was part of the staff retained when Mora was hired. The Rams have now dropped to a 2-3 record in Mora’s inaugural season.
