Jimi Hendrix Woodstock footage released from stage perspective

Rare footage of Jimi Hendrix’s closing performance at the Woodstock festival has been released via the documentary ‘Live At Woodstock – A Second Look’. The footage, captured on August 18, 1969, provides a close-up perspective from the stage, filmed by Albert Goodman, a 22-year-old acting student at the time.

Goodman managed to access the stage by posing as part of the crew, positioning his camera behind percussionist Juma Sultan, approximately four and a half meters from Hendrix. Using a Sony CV open-reel video recorder, he documented the performance of the Gypsy Sun And Rainbows ensemble, which included Billy Cox, Mitch Mitchell, Larry Lee, Juma Sultan, and Jerry Velez.

While the black-and-white recording is rudimentary in definition, it offers a rare, intimate view of Hendrix performing iconic songs such as ‘Purple Haze’, ‘Voodoo Child’, and his rendition of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. The footage, which was previously included in a 2005 DVD edition, is now available for free on the official Jimi Hendrix YouTube channel.
