Release of rare Jimi Hendrix Woodstock footage

Overview

Rare footage of Jimi Hendrix’s 1969 Woodstock performance has been unearthed and released through the documentary ‘Jimi Hendrix: Live at Woodstock — A Second Look’. The recordings were captured by Albert Goodman, a 22-year-old drama student who gained stage access by posing as a member of the official film crew.

Using a Sony open-reel video recorder, Goodman filmed the performance from approximately 15 feet behind percussionist Juma Sultan. The black-and-white footage documents the Gypsy Sun and Rainbows ensemble, including members Billy Cox, Larry Lee, Juma Sultan, Jerry Velez, and Mitch Mitchell.

While described as rudimentary in definition, the material provides an intimate view of Hendrix performing songs such as ‘Purple Haze’, ‘Voodoo Child’, and ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’. The footage, which was previously included in a 2005 DVD edition, has been made available for free on the official Jimi Hendrix YouTube channel.
