Mali: JNIM militants launch deadly attacks on military bases and airbase

Al-Qaeda-linked militants from Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) have launched a series of significant attacks against Malian government forces and Russian paramilitary Africa Corps personnel in central Mali.

A major assault on September 10 in Dioura resulted in heavy casualties. While JNIM claimed to have killed 150 soldiers, security and diplomatic sources estimated the death toll between 120 and 130, with over 100 soldiers reportedly taken hostage. The Malian army confirmed losses and stated it conducted a week-long retaliatory operation to strike insurgent positions.

Simultaneously, JNIM targeted the Sévaré airbase and the town of Konna. The group claimed to have destroyed a control tower and radar at the Sévaré airbase using mortar and artillery fire, also targeting air defense systems, drones, and helicopters. JNIM reported 33 pro-government casualties in the Sévaré and Konna strikes. Local reports indicate the Sévaré airport underwent six consecutive nights of shelling.

Russian Africa Corps fighters, who support the Malian military, were also reportedly affected, with JNIM claiming a captain among their casualties. Local residents in Sévaré reported seeing approximately 40 wounded Malian and Russian fighters in local hospitals following the clashes.
