JNIM insurgency in Mali
Overview
In early September 2026, the Al-Qaeda affiliate JNIM (Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin) launched a series of significant attacks against Malian military forces and Russian Africa Corps personnel in central Mali.
On September 8, militants ambushed a convoy near the village of Kaka in the Mopti region, resulting in the deaths of 13 Russian and Malian soldiers. JNIM claimed responsibility for the ambush, reporting the capture of various equipment, including motorcycles, machine guns, assault rifles, and a drone.
On September 10, a large-scale offensive targeted the Dioura military camp. While initial reports estimated between 50 and 80 Malian soldiers killed and at least five members of the Russian Africa Corps dead, subsequent details have highlighted a significant discrepancy between official accounts and militant claims. JNIM released a communiqué with visual evidence claiming they killed 150 Malian soldiers—including a colonel and a captain—and captured 93 soldiers.
Newer reports indicate the attack on the Dioura camp may be one of the deadliest suffered by the Malian army in the fifteen-year conflict. These accounts state at least 100 Malian soldiers and five Russian Africa Corps paramilitaries were killed. Security sources and local officials reported that the camp was abandoned following the assault and stripped of weaponry. Military staff noted that casualties included at least two officers, with dozens more reported missing, wounded, or taken prisoner. Some sources indicated that the soldiers lacked sufficient air support during the engagement.
