JNIM militants attack Dioura military camp in Mali

On September 10, 2026, the Al-Qaeda-linked group JNIM launched an attack on the Dioura military camp in the Mopti region of central Mali. The incident has resulted in a significant discrepancy between official government reports and claims made by the militant group.

While Malian military leadership initially downplayed the event, JNIM released a detailed communiqué accompanied by visual evidence. The group claims to have killed 150 Malian soldiers, including a colonel and a captain, and captured 93 soldiers. JNIM also reported the destruction of 15 military vehicles and over 100 motorcycles, as well as the seizure of various heavy weapons and light arms.

Reports indicate that at least five soldiers from the Russian paramilitary group Africa Corps were among those killed in the assault. This attack occurs amidst a deepening security crisis in Mali, where the military junta has increasingly relied on Russian paramilitary support to combat jihadist insurgencies.
