Hungarian PM Péter Magyar accuses former President János Áder of misusing public funds for US vacation

Prime Minister Péter Magyar posted documents alleging that former President János Áder’s 2018 trip to the United States cost about HUF 55 million of taxpayer money and included family‑holiday activities. He highlighted three days of the itinerary that he says resemble a vacation: a visit to Disney World on 25 October, a later stay in New York with a helicopter tour on 30‑31 October, and the presence of Áder’s daughter throughout the trip. Magyar also noted that a previously paid hotel reservation of HUF 1.3 million was cancelled and re‑booked, and he questioned when and how much of the money had been repaid to the state budget.

Áder responded that the visit was an official state trip, that any private expenses—including the Disney tickets and his daughter’s travel—were paid from his own funds, and he rejected the accusations as false. He warned Magyar that he would take “civil and criminal” legal action and signed off with the brief statement, “See you in court.”

The exchange has become a public political dispute in Hungary, with the prime minister demanding transparency on the use of public funds and the former president insisting the allegations are unfounded.
