Joanna Tyrowicz sparks debate over Polish pension system

Economist and Monetary Policy Council member Professor Joanna Tyrowicz has sparked debate following her remarks at the Campus Polska Przyszłości event in Olsztyn regarding the Polish public pension system (ZUS).

Tyrowicz addressed the fundamental purpose of a pension system, noting that while no financial instrument can perfectly solve the risk of outliving one's savings, the ZUS system provides a lifelong guarantee. She explained that the system functions as a form of mutual support, where those who live longer benefit from the contributions of others.

While she stated that the pension system alone may not guarantee a 'dignified life' in retirement, she highlighted that the current structure includes a guarantee of a minimum pension. Her comments have drawn mixed reactions on social media, with some critics accusing her of defending ZUS, while other experts have defended her explanation of the system's role as a life insurance mechanism against longevity risk.
