Joby Aviation completes 3,199-mile autonomous flight across the US

Joby Aviation has completed a 3,199-mile autonomous flight across the United States, traveling from Concord, California, to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The aircraft, a modified Cessna 208B Caravan equipped with autonomous technology acquired from Xwing, successfully managed taxiing, takeoff, navigation, and landing without any control inputs from the onboard safety pilot.

While a human pilot remained in the cockpit to serve as a backup, the mission was supervised remotely by ground personnel located as far as 2,323 miles away. Remote operators managed flight plan updates and air traffic control communications. During the journey, the aircraft navigated through busy airspace and encountered severe weather, demonstrating its ability to reroute in real-time.

The flight included stops in Phoenix, Fort Worth, and Shaw Air Force Base to test the system's capabilities in various environments, including military logistics and major commercial hubs. Joby Aviation is positioning this technology for applications in air freight, emergency response, and defense logistics, noting that cargo operations may face a lower regulatory hurdle than passenger services.
