Overview

Joby Aviation successfully completed a 3,199-mile autonomous coast-to-coast flight across the continental United States, traveling from Concord, California, to North Carolina. Using a modified Cessna 208B Grand Caravan equipped with J208 autonomous technology acquired from Xwing, the aircraft performed taxiing, takeoff, navigation, and landing without control inputs from the onboard safety pilot.

The mission demonstrated the system’s ability to navigate high-density airspace and reroute in real time to avoid severe weather and thunderstorms. Operating under an FAA Experimental Airworthiness Certificate, the flight tested the feasibility of retrofitting autonomous systems onto existing, pre-certified aircraft. Joby Aviation intends to apply this technology to air freight, emergency response, and defense logistics.
