Jockey Club de San Isidro: lightning strike kills four polo mares

A lightning strike at the Jockey Club de San Isidro in Buenos Aires province killed four polo mares on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred on court 6, located in the center of the San Isidro Racecourse grounds, during a period of unstable weather.

At the time of the strike, approximately 20 horses were under the supervision of a caretaker. The animals were tied to a post awaiting training when the discharge reportedly hit a steel cable, transmitting the electricity to the horses. While four mares died instantly, two others were knocked to the ground but managed to recover. Veterinarians are monitoring the survivors for potential long-term injuries, such as ruptured eardrums, which may prevent them from playing polo again.

The electrical discharge also injured the caretaker, a petisero, who was thrown approximately three meters by the force of the impact. He was treated at a nearby medical center and is reported to be in stable condition and out of danger. No other people were injured during the event.
