Ukraine seeks Patriot missiles amid defense budget shortfall
Ukraine is intensifying efforts to bolster its air defenses ahead of winter, focusing on the procurement of approximately 1,000 Patriot interceptor missiles. To facilitate this, the European Union has approved the use of 3.2 billion euros from a larger 90 billion euro support loan to fund the purchase of critical components for American-made Patriot systems.
Germany has committed to urgently sending PAC-2 Patriot interceptors from its national reserves to Ukraine to counter intensified Russian drone and missile attacks. Additionally, Berlin is increasing supplies of air-to-air missiles and long-range artillery ammunition, often in coordination with the United Kingdom.
Despite these aid packages, Ukraine faces a significant financial challenge, reporting a defense budget shortfall of approximately $27 billion. This deficit has caused concern among European officials, leading Kyiv to seek additional funding from allies including the UK, Canada, and Japan. Meanwhile, German officials have urged Ukraine to increase procurement from the German defense industry to ensure that European taxpayers benefit from the military support provided.
