German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has engaged in diplomatic efforts and policy critiques regarding the war in Ukraine. He criticized the government of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for insufficient arms procurement from German companies, arguing that the German defense industry should benefit from expenditures to justify costs to German taxpayers.

To bolster air defenses against Russian ballistic missile attacks, Ukraine is working to secure approximately 1,000 Patriot interceptor missiles. This procurement is being facilitated through a combination of ally support and a European Union loan, with the EU approving the use of 3.2 billion euros from a larger 90 billion euro support loan. This move grants an exception to rules that typically prioritize European manufacturers. Germany has begun the urgent deployment of PAC-2 Patriot interceptors from its national reserves, while the United Kingdom has committed a 100 million pound package including Patriot missiles, ammunition, and drones. Despite these efforts, Ukraine reports an unexpected $27 billion shortfall in its defense budget. Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara noted that most of the new missiles will not arrive for several years, prompting Kyiv to request immediate assistance from existing ally stockpiles to cover the current shortfall.
