Johann Wadephul seeks US mediation in Ukraine conflict

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul expressed hope following a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio that the US government under Donald Trump will increase its engagement in negotiations regarding the war in Ukraine. Wadephul noted that while the relationship between the two officials is constructive, no concrete progress was made during the call.

Wadephul emphasized that both he and Rubio agree the conflict must ultimately be resolved through negotiations. However, he observed that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not currently appear ready for such talks, citing a previous inconclusive meeting between Trump and Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, as evidence that mediation efforts alone may not suffice without a willingness to negotiate from Moscow.

The German Foreign Minister pointed toward the upcoming G20 summit held under US presidency as a potential venue for diplomatic engagement, noting it is possible that the Russian President may travel to Washington for the event.
