New York Giants reshape roster under head coach John Harbaugh

The New York Giants are concluding their first training camp under head coach John Harbaugh, marked by a more rigorous schedule and a shift toward a meritocracy-based roster. Harbaugh has implemented a demanding regimen, increasing the number of practices and emphasizing situational football. This new approach is impacting the depth chart, with high-salaried players like corner Paulson Adebo and edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux seeing reduced roles.

As the 53-man roster deadline approaches, veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. is making a case for his return to the team. Following a preseason performance against the Jets where he recorded three catches for 53 yards, Harbaugh stated that Beckham ‘has done enough to make an NFL roster, for sure,’ though a final decision on his status remains pending. Simultaneously, the team faces potential roster changes involving long-tenured receiver Darius Slayton, who may not make the final cut.

On the defensive side, the Giants acquired defensive lineman C. J. Okoye from the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a 2028 seventh-round pick to bolster depth. In the quarterback room, Harbaugh opted not to play second-year quarterback Jaxson Dart in the preseason finale to avoid injury risk, relying instead on veteran Jameis Winston.
