Johnny Hunt appeals dismissal in lawsuit against SBC

Johnny Hunt Southern Baptist Convention Guidepost Solutions legal appeal sexual abuse mishandling allegations

Former Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) president Johnny Hunt has filed an appeal following a U.S. District Court decision to dismiss the final claim in his lawsuit against the SBC, its Executive Committee, and Guidepost Solutions. The appeal, filed on August 18, challenges the recent dismissal as well as several previous rulings in favor of the defendants dating back to March 2024.

Hunt originally filed the lawsuit in March 2023. The legal action centered on his inclusion in a 2022 Guidepost Solutions report, which investigated allegations that the SBC Executive Committee mishandled claims of sexual abuse.

Chief U.S. District Judge William L. Campbell Jr. had previously issued a summary judgment for the defendants, with the exception of a November 2022 tweet by then-SBC President Bart Barber regarding Hunt. Jeff Iorg, president of the SBC Executive Committee, stated that the organization will review the appeal and respond accordingly.
