Johnny Hunt legal dispute with SBC
Overview
A defamation lawsuit brought by former Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) President Johnny Hunt against the SBC, its Executive Committee, and Guidepost Solutions has moved into the appeals process.
On August 12, 2026, Chief District Judge William L. Campbell Jr. issued a summary judgment dismissing the final remaining claim in the case. The lawsuit, which originated in March 2023, was linked to a 2022 Guidepost Solutions report concerning the mishandling of sexual abuse claims within the SBC. The final claim focused on a November 2022 tweet by then-SBC President Bart Barber. The court ruled that Hunt was a public figure and found no evidence that the tweet was made with ‘actual malice.’
Following this dismissal, Hunt filed an appeal on August 18, challenging the recent decision as well as several prior rulings in favor of the defendants. Jeff Iorg, president of the SBC Executive Committee, indicated that the organization would review the appeal and respond.
