Johnson Asiedu Nketiah discusses flaws in representative democracy

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed concerns regarding the limitations of representative democracy and the implementation of recent electoral rulings in Ghana.

Speaking on Ambassador TV, Nketiah argued that a significant weakness of representative governance is that elected officials often prioritize their own views over the interests of their constituents. He noted that while representative democracy is the most practical system for modern large-scale states, the tension between a representative's personal mindset and the public's will remains a defining challenge. He suggested that reforms to strengthen accountability and public participation could improve the system.

Nketiah's comments follow discussions regarding the Supreme Court of Ghana's decision regarding the "One-Person, One-Vote" system for political party primaries, which aims to replace the existing delegate system.
