Johnson Asiedu Nketiah advocacy for democratic reform

Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, National Chairman of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), has advocated for systemic reforms to strengthen democratic governance and institutional credibility.

Initially, Nketiah addressed the inherent limitations of representative democracy, noting that elected officials often prioritize personal views over constituent interests. He specifically commented on the tension between individual representatives and the public will following the Supreme Court of Ghana’s decision regarding the ‘One-Person, One-Vote’ system for political party primaries.

Expanding his scope to a continental level, Nketiah called for fundamental reforms within African political parties and judiciaries. Speaking at a dialogue in Nigeria, he argued that political parties must evolve from ‘mere electoral machines’ into permanent democratic institutions. He further emphasized that the judiciary must secure public trust through fairness and openness rather than through legislation, citing the role of courts in resolving electoral disputes in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi.
