Johor authorities close Kulai premises over upside-down flags

The Johor state government has ordered the temporary closure of an industrial premises in Kulai after the Jalur Gemilang (the Malaysian national flag) and the Johor state flag were found displayed upside down.

Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor, Chairman of the Johor Housing and Local Government Committee, stated that the state will not compromise on actions affecting the respect due to national and state symbols. The Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu) has suspended the premises' operations until the company provides an explanation and completes a formal pledge of undertaking (Aku Janji).

The action follows the Trade, Business and Industrial Licensing By-laws 2019. While the flags were immediately corrected, police are conducting an investigation, and the company's director is expected to be summoned for questioning. Authorities have reminded all business owners and industrial players to ensure flags are displayed correctly and respectfully, noting that negligence is not an acceptable excuse.
