Johor Bahru cloud seeding operation launched to combat haze
The National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) and the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) have launched a cloud seeding operation (OPA) in Johor Bahru to mitigate the effects of ongoing haze. The operation aims to stimulate rainfall, provided meteorological conditions remain suitable.
MetMalaysia Director General Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip stated that the operation was initiated after haze conditions in Johor met established procedures. While Johor was not originally part of this week's seeding plan, which focused on northern Peninsular Malaysia, the current haze levels necessitated the intervention. The monsoon transition phase is currently providing conducive conditions, characterized by higher humidity and a greater potential for thick rain cloud formation.
Despite the seeding efforts, haze is expected to persist for the next two to three days due to wind blowing smoke from fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Officials noted that as long as fires continue and wind directions carry smoke toward Johor, haze conditions may recur. The public is advised to reduce outdoor activities and wear masks when air quality is poor.
