Johor State Election Campaign Faces Digital Sabotage Warnings and Police Probes

During the buildup to the 16th Johor state election on 11 July, Malaysia’s Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil warned voters to remain vigilant against digital sabotage. He said fake social‑media accounts impersonating candidates have been created to spread false claims and urged the public to verify information with reputable mainstream media. The Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is monitoring election‑related misinformation and has asked platforms to remove such content.

The Johor Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) reported that eight investigation papers have been opened since the nomination day on 27 June. The inquiries cover offences under sections 425‑427 of the Penal Code, including sabotage using fire or explosives, assault, and property damage. Police received 2,037 permit applications for campaign events between 27 June and 2 July, approving 1,849, and monitored 1,155 political activities to ensure compliance with law and public safety. Authorities stressed the need for peaceful, lawful campaigning and called on parties and supporters to avoid provocation and the spread of false information.
