Negeri Sembilan election: race narrows
Entities: Barisan Nasional · Negeri Sembilan · Pakatan Harapan · Perikatan Nasional · KTM
Overview
The Negeri Sembilan state election campaign has progressed from nomination to a tightly contested race. Senior adviser Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz urged voters to judge state governments on concrete economic data, pointing to RM19 billion of investment and reserves above RM1 billion since 2018, and called for continued support for the incumbent administration. Umno council member Sharkar Shamsudin warned that the BN‑PN seat‑sharing pact used in Negeri Sembilan may not suit other states, urging a more flexible approach. Barisan Nasional unveiled a manifesto centred on the “Skim Salam Sejahtera” cash‑assistance scheme, promising RM30 billion in new state investments and 50,000 jobs over five years. Perikatan Nasional adopted the BN platform and added 14 pledges, including a blue‑economy plan, a state AI and semiconductor talent corporation, transit housing for newlyweds and graduates, expanded low‑income aid and welfare for non‑Muslim religious affairs. The partnership is often referred to in the campaign as Perikatan Barisan Nasional. Pakatan Harapan candidates continued to stress people‑centred development and direct voter outreach. In Pilah, Datuk Noor Zunita Begum Mohd Ibrahim highlighted Generation Z welfare, upgraded Seremban‑Kuala Pilah road works and a “Walkabout” programme alongside Zafrul. In Ampangan, Datuk Muhammad Nazri Kassim emphasised flood mitigation, road repairs and ongoing projects such as the Taman Bandar Besar estates, portraying PH’s three‑term stewardship as essential for balanced growth. Political analysts note that the BN‑PN alliance holds a slight lead over PH in key battlegrounds – Linggi, Pertang, Rantau, Nilai and several mixed seats – but the margin remains narrow, with the final outcome likely to hinge on vote transfers on polling day. Early voting on 28 July recorded a 91 percent turnout among security‑force voters, markedly higher than the 2023 rate, and UMNO deputy president Mohamed Khaled Nordin urged these voters to back Barisan Nasional.
