BN Wins 48 of 56 Seats in Johor Election, Straining Anwar's Federal Coalition

Barisan Nasional (BN) secured a decisive victory in Malaysia’s 16th Johor state election, winning 48 of the 56 contested seats while the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition retained only eight. Voter turnout was reported at 68.7 percent. BN’s victory came after it chose to run independently of its federal ally, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Pakatan Harapan, a strategy that analysts say could reshape future state contests.

The result has raised questions about the durability of the federal unity government formed after the 2022 hung parliament. Prime Minister Anwar congratulated BN and urged all PH candidates to continue serving the public, while BN Chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi hailed the win as a “blue wave” that may spread to other states. The outcome is also being watched by investors, especially regarding the Johor‑Singapore Special Economic Zone, with some commentators suggesting the landslide could boost confidence in the region’s development agenda.

Political observers note that the election may intensify discussions about an early national poll, as BN’s strong performance could embolden calls for a shift in the balance of power within the coalition government.
