Anwar threatens election as coalition rifts over Johor contest

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim warned that he could dissolve Malaysia’s parliament and call a snap general election if internal divisions within the ruling coalition persist. The immediate trigger is Barisan Nasional’s (BN/Umno) decision to contest all 56 seats in the upcoming Johor state election on its own ticket, a move seen as a direct challenge to the unity government formed with Pakatan Harapan (PH).

Anwar said he will meet BN president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to discuss the situation, emphasizing the need for “harmonious” negotiations. Analysts note that the rift is compounded by internal disputes within PKR, including recent defections by senior figures Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi, and by growing public concern over inflation and economic stability.

If the conflict escalates, Anwar indicated that dissolution of parliament would trigger an early 16th General Election, raising the stakes for both parties and potentially increasing the fiscal cost of a separate state and federal vote.
