Joice Hasselmann declares support for Lula in presidential runoff

Former federal deputy and government leader Joice Hasselmann has announced her support for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the upcoming second-round presidential election. Hasselmann, a former ally of Jair Bolsonaro, stated her decision is driven by the need to defend democracy, despite maintaining political disagreements with the PT party.

In recent interviews, Hasselmann alleged she faced persecution, including being beaten and having her communications intercepted in 2021, claiming that “Bolsonaro tried to kill me.” She also stated she had previously reported the existence of a coup draft to the Supreme Court.

Other figures have also broken with the Bolsonaro family or expressed support for Lula. Paula Zambelli Salgado, sister of former deputy Carla Zambelli, declared her vote for Lula to defend the Constitution. Additionally, former Acre governor Binho Marques expressed support for the president, while the children of political leaders Fernando Henrique Cardoso and Mario Covas participated in an event supporting Lula's reelection.
