Tour de France night doping tests spark rider criticism and safety concerns

During the 2026 Tour de France, the International Testing Agency (ITA) conducted anti‑doping controls on two top contenders, Tadej Pogacar at 05:00 and Jonas Vingegaard at 02:00, after obtaining approval from a Paris judge. The riders’ union CPA condemned the practice, arguing that waking athletes at night harms their health, recovery and safety, and called for a reform of testing procedures. Several riders, including Pogacar, Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel and others, described the night checks as “inhuman” and suggested the lack of sleep may have contributed to Vingegaard’s crash and clavicle fracture, which forced his withdrawal. The ITA defended the tests as necessary for an effective anti‑doping programme, noting that surprise checks can close loopholes. Reports indicate that up to eight teams were subject to nocturnal testing, intensifying the debate over the balance between anti‑doping integrity and athletes’ wellbeing.
